“SUMMER ROAD” by Stephanie Hartshorn

This is a 'felt place' more than a specific location. I started the piece just focused on the clouds… shaping and reshaping, then dropped into the landscape. Same thing shaping reshaping, changing seasons... and when I brought that same curiosity to the road, that's when the painting came together-- that's when everything fell in place-- that's when I felt the connection to the emotion/memory I was looking for This now holds the memory of driving up to my late father-in-law’s ranch as the road climbs higher along the ridge, pockets of cottonwood and aspen. The palette feels about the time of year we would go ...kind of an August September feel.. A 'classic dirt road': rocks, washed out edges, and just a little moisture lingering from recent rain.
