T. Allen Lawson was born and raised in Sheridan, and the landscape, people, and quieter moments of the American West have remained an important part of his artistic life. Known for finding beauty and significance in scenes that might otherwise be overlooked, Lawson has an extraordinary ability to make a small, intimate painting feel both personal and timeless.
Missing Kevin was part of Lawson’s celebrated Hometown exhibition at SAGE Community Arts in Sheridan. The 2018 exhibition was particularly significant for both Lawson and his hometown community—it sold out and, at the time, was the largest exhibition SAGE had hosted.
Painted in 2017, Missing Kevin measures just 10 × 7½ inches, yet it carries the quiet observation and thoughtful composition for which Lawson is known. The title adds another layer to the painting. Who is Kevin, and why is he missing? Without imposing an explanation that the artist himself has not publicly given, the title invites us to look longer and wonder about the story behind the scene.

Lawson’s career extends far beyond Wyoming. His work can be found in important public and private collections, and he has received significant recognition throughout his career, including the Prix de West Purchase Award. In 2008, he was selected to create the painting used for the official White House Christmas card.
