“I’ve always been drawn to the West, not just the imagery, but the life behind it. From a young age, it was the combination of art and the Western way of life that held my attention.
Over time, painting has become a discipline as much as a passion. I’m interested in understanding my subject more deeply, studying it, simplifying it, and finding a way to communicate it clearly. Accuracy matters to me, not just visually, but in representing the subject with respect.
A lot of my process happens outside of painting. Building reference, working with materials, and creating elements I can use in my work all help me understand what I’m trying to paint. Each piece is an opportunity to improve, to see more clearly, to say more with less, and to continue refining both the process and the result.”

Toby Sauer is a contemporary Western painter whose work is grounded in lived experience, discipline, and a deep respect for the subject matter he depicts. Raised in Montana, Sauer developed an early connection to both the land and the visual language of the West, an influence that continues to shape his work today. He currently lives and works in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, where he continues to build both his practice and his body of work.
While his foundation in art began early, Sauer’s path has not been linear. His return to painting as a focused pursuit reflects a deliberate commitment, one that is evident in both his work ethic and the steady refinement of his paintings. Known for maintaining a rigorous studio practice, often beginning in the early hours of the day, Sauer approaches painting with consistency and intent.
Alongside this discipline is a strong desire to learn and absorb information. Sauer is continually studying his subject matter, his materials, and the work of other artists, approaching painting as an ongoing process of growth rather than a fixed outcome. This mindset informs both the evolution of his work and the clarity with which he continues to develop his voice.
His subject matter centers on the working West, including figures, horses, and quiet moments within the landscape. What distinguishes his work is not simply what he paints, but how he approaches it. Sauer places a strong emphasis on authenticity, taking care to study and build his own reference materials to ensure accuracy in both cultural and historical elements.
This commitment extends beyond observation. Sauer constructs elements used within his paintings, including hand-built beaded horse masks, which he creates outside of painting hours and incorporates directly into his compositions. This process allows him to work from subjects he has physically engaged with, deepening both his understanding and the authenticity of what he ultimately brings to the canvas.
At a compositional level, Sauer’s paintings reveal a growing sensitivity to design. Forms are simplified, edges are carefully controlled, and color relationships are used to structure the painting rather than merely describe it. There is a restraint in his approach, an understanding of when to hold back, that allows each piece to breathe and invites the viewer to engage more fully.
Light plays a central role in his work, often defining mood and anchoring the viewer within a specific time of day. Whether capturing a quiet pause or a subtle shift in atmosphere, Sauer avoids unnecessary dramatization and instead focuses on clarity, cohesion, and presence.
Sauer’s work continues to evolve through a process of refinement, pushing toward stronger design, greater economy of mark-making, and a clearer visual voice. His paintings appeal to collectors who value authenticity, thoughtful execution, and an artist committed to long-term growth within the Western tradition.
