Paula B. Holtzclaw is a nationally recognized American artist known for her luminous landscapes and her remarkable ability to capture the drama, beauty, and atmosphere of the natural world. Based in North Carolina, she draws much of her inspiration from the coastline, marshlands, waterways, and Southern landscape, while her travels have provided inspiration from landscapes across the country.

Holtzclaw’s paintings blend classical realism with an impressionistic sensitivity to light, color, and atmosphere. Her landscapes often portray pristine, undeveloped places, quiet stretches of water, expansive skies, distant horizons, and fleeting changes in weather and light. Although best known for her landscapes, she is also an accomplished still life painter whose work reflects her admiration for the traditions and techniques of the Old Masters.

Art has been part of Holtzclaw’s life since childhood. Both of her grandmothers painted, and their influence helped foster her early love of drawing and painting. That connection to art remained with her throughout her life and ultimately led her to leave an established professional career to devote herself fully to painting.

At the heart of Holtzclaw’s work is a deep appreciation for beauty and the emotional connection we form with the places and objects around us. She paints with both careful observation and feeling, seeking not simply to record a landscape but to communicate the experience of being there, the softness of changing light, the stillness of water, the movement of clouds, or the quiet grandeur of an expansive view.

Her paintings have been selected for numerous prestigious national juried and museum exhibitions, including exhibitions at the Gilcrease Museum, Booth Western Art Museum, Haggin Museum, Muscarelle Museum of Art, and other prominent institutions. She has received significant recognition from many of the country’s leading representational art organizations.

Holtzclaw is a Master Member of both American Women Artists and Women Artists of the West and holds Signature Memberships with Oil Painters of America, the American Society of Marine Artists, the American Impressionist Society, and the National Oil & Acrylic Painters’ Society. She has also been invited to serve as a juror for regional and national exhibitions and has contributed her experience and leadership to the broader representational art community.

Underlying all of Holtzclaw’s work is a simple but powerful belief that beauty matters. Her paintings encourage the viewer to slow down, observe more carefully, and reconnect with moments in nature that can otherwise pass unnoticed.
