Artist's Statement

My work is rooted in stillness, atmosphere, and the subtle emotional weight of place. I am drawn to moments when light is low and forms soften - dusk, nightfall, winter, and weathered landscapes where quiet becomes the subject. These conditions invite a slower way of seeing, one that allows nuance and restraint to speak more powerfully than detail alone.

Working primarily in tonal values, I explore how light moves across land and water, how edges dissolve, and how mood emerges through simplicity. Whether painting en plein air or working in the studio, I strive to distill a scene to its essence - balancing structure and softness, clarity and mystery. I am less interested in describing a location than in conveying how it feels to be there.

Montana’s wide spaces and shifting skies deeply influence my work. The landscape offers both solitude and presence, and I aim to honor that duality in my paintings. Through muted palettes and thoughtful composition, I invite the viewer to pause, breathe, and enter a moment of quiet reflection.

Biography

Gwendolyn Kern is a representational artist residing in Billings, MT.  She is inspired by America’s landscapes, its history and iconic characteristics, and the challenge of thoughtful composition.

Always drawing as a kid, her adolescent academics revolved around art. Thanks to her high school electives, and one tenth grade art teacher, her introduction to oil painting began early on. Through books, forums, and experimentation, she continued to understand traditional mediums by studying the techniques of those that came before her. While Gwendolyn’s college career concentrated on graphic design, she never abandoned her partiality for fine art.

Now, using classical means, Gwendolyn combines her background in design with her affection for traditional methods to create, embrace and share nature’s beauty as she sees it.
