My work begins with a quiet moment, something easily overlooked. It might be the way light settles across a field at the end of the day, or how the landscape softens as it recedes into atmosphere. I am less interested in describing a place exactly as it is and more drawn to how it feels to stand within it.
Working in pastel allows me to respond directly and intuitively. I am constantly editing, simplifying, and searching for the essential relationships of value, color, and edge. Much of what I choose to leave out is just as important as what I include. I want the painting to breathe, to hold a sense of stillness that invites the viewer to slow down and spend time with it.
I am deeply influenced by the tonalists and by painters who understood restraint, who trusted that quiet moments could carry weight. The Western landscape provides an endless source of inspiration, not for its grandeur alone, but for its subtlety. There is a quiet order to it, a rhythm that reveals itself the longer you look.
Ultimately, my goal is not to make a statement about the land, but to create a space where someone can have a personal experience with it. If the work feels calm, grounded, and honest, then I feel I have done what I set out to do.

Clint Howard is an American landscape painter working primarily in pastel, known for his atmospheric interpretations of the Western landscape. His work is rooted in a quiet observation of nature, where shifting light, open space, and subtle tonal relationships take precedence over spectacle. Through restraint and sensitivity, Howard creates paintings that invite stillness, works that reveal themselves gradually rather than demand immediate attention.
A largely self-directed artist, Howard committed seriously to painting in recent years and has quickly distinguished himself within the national pastel community. His work has been recognized at a high level, including receiving the Founder’s Award, First Place Overall, in the Pastel 100, one of the most competitive and respected pastel competitions in the country. He has since earned Master Circle status with the International Association of Pastel Societies, a designation that reflects sustained excellence and peer recognition on an international level.
Howard’s paintings have been accepted into juried exhibitions with organizations such as the International Association of Pastel Societies and the American Impressionist Society, and he has exhibited in the bi-annual American Tonalist Society exhibition at Ballard’s Fine Art Gallery. His work has also been featured in Pastel Journal, further establishing his presence within the contemporary pastel movement.
Influenced by the traditions of Tonalism and American landscape painting, Howard approaches his subject matter with an emphasis on mood, harmony, and design. His compositions are carefully edited, often reducing the landscape to its essential elements, value, edge, and color, allowing atmosphere to carry the emotional weight of the piece. The result is a body of work that feels both timeless and contemporary, grounded in tradition yet distinctly personal.
Howard lives in Arkansas with his wife and their two children, where the surrounding landscape continues to inform and shape his work.
